Welcome to my site!
My name is Will Stokes-Roberts and I am an Aerospace Engineering Student at the University of Sheffield. I have always loved building remote controlled vehicles and documenting my build processes which is why i decided to make this website years before starting my degree. I hope you find what I have done helpful or interesting and feel free to contact me with any queries.
The following paragraphs were written was I was about 15 but I keep them in because, well, I like them!
This site (as the title suggests) is designed to get you into or simply convey the brilliance of the fantastic RC hobby- 'RC' being 'Remote Controlled'- by giving you a close insight into how i have evolved to love what i am doing. It will show you simple websites you can visit to find interesting information to spark an idea, be it in the RC world or beyond. It will show you how to- in depth- create a sophisticated quadcopter, then build a FPV setup designed to conform to English legislation and to build a fully automated drone (all this is to come) The site will ultimately show you some interesting stuff even if you choose to only look at my 'Blog' page and not into detail with my 'Build Guide' pages (Quadcopter build guide as of Jan 2015) and everything you see on this site is directly from a person who saw an idea, and was instantly hooked on building and creating wonderful electronic creations; this is how i got into the RC hobby.
It all began when i came across 'mini' or 'micro' quadcopters (the famous Hubsan X4 range to be precise) and was instantly wondering: "but they are so small?" "How can you do anything interesting with it?" which then developed into: "can they get any larger?" Damn right they could. I found myself looking at pre-built and self built quadcopters on Youtube, footage of amazing flights to build guides which got me thinking, why couldn't i do this? I then decided to see what i would be getting in for by purchasing a Hubsan X4 as i didn't want to spend the hefty price that a proper quadcopter can ensue. It was £35 and allowed me to get a cheaper insight into what i ultimately had the ambition to build. The little Hubsan took a beating for many weeks until i came to the decision that i really wanted to build a full scale one. Note that i wanted to 'build' one, i wasn't that interested in the idea of buying a DJI Phantom or other pre-built full scale quadcopter as it would then have very little meaning to me, the time and effort building something has a much higher moral value to me than a simple device.
So the construction began, and during the production i had the idea to make a blog to document all of my efforts in the form of a blog. It then developed into containing more information and actually being a formal, helpful (i hope) document.
Thank you for reading and enjoy.
